Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
National unity is crucial for fostering peace, stability, and development in multi-ethnic and multi-religious societies like Nigeria. Local television serves as a significant platform for promoting unity by providing content that highlights shared values, cultural diversity, and common aspirations. In Sokoto South LGA, local television stations are positioned to play a pivotal role in bridging divides and fostering understanding among various groups. Through programs, news, and documentaries that emphasize collective identity and collaboration, local television can act as a unifying force (Ahmed & Suleiman, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these efforts depends on the quality, reach, and inclusivity of the content broadcasted.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by local television stations to promote national unity, persistent ethnic and religious tensions in Sokoto South LGA indicate that the impact of these initiatives may be limited. Factors such as biased reporting, limited reach, and lack of representation in programming undermine the role of television as a unifying medium. This study evaluates the effectiveness of local television in promoting national unity and explores ways to enhance its contribution to fostering harmony.
